Q:
Hi! Is it possible to rent time in the woodshop? For instance a couple of hours to rip down sheet goods, etc. Without a full membership
A:
No answers yet. Answer this questionQ:
Is it possible to work at your space for woodworking with my own tools?i just need space and power
A:
HI, You are welcome to bring your own hand and small power tools but not large equipment. Insurance regulations prevent members from bringing in some items such as their own chop saw or table saw as we have provided them. Hope that helps!… more

My boys were in level 1 for fall semester and we paid out of pocket $800 each for 12 weeks. Not with charter funds. I personally knew of at least 7 other kids whose parents used charter funds, so for some reason, when you use state money, your expectations are not as high?
I didn't expect extended wait times to use the tools and machines most weeks, no communication from the Education Manager until Week 5, almost halfway through the semester, to know what they did, and were underwhelmed at their projects until they were nearing the end.
I would highly recommend a do-over with classes that enroll less than 10 kids. My friend even spoke with the manager or owner expressing our concerns. Our max capacity class had lots of waiting around, partner or group work to save time and resources, and the teachers doing more of the work to get the kids through the projects in time.
I did not think this was a good value for the price I paid. One kid does not want to come back and the other wants to give it one more chance. I will not make a decision about Level 2 until mid-January when I survey how many kids are enrolled in each time slot.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Business owner information

Hi Cecile, Thank you for your feedback. We appreciate it and always try to learn from it.
We occasionally hear feedback such as this from students that are new to hands-on shop activities. Working in a shop environment is significantly different than what most young people are used to in today’s fast-paced and instant gratification world. Shop activities can't be rushed for a multitude of reasons. First and foremost is safety. You rush using a saw and serious injuries can occur. Also, you can't rush glue drying, stain soaking in, or boards through a planer. Shop class is inherently slower and that is the beauty of it. You have time to think about the next steps, collaborate with your fellow students, look at what worked and what didn't, and generally be in the moment. All skills and techniques that are in desperate need today.
You are correct that the projects later in the semester are more impressive. Shop skills, like most things, start with the basics and build up from there. Most of our students start not even knowing the difference between a straight blade screwdriver and a phillps screwdriver and in a matter of weeks are using a variety of manual and powered tools to make all sorts of projects. Level 1 especially is about gaining exposure to a wide range of specialties to help students know what is out there and to learn the basics. The following levels go much deeper in fewer topics to really start to build skills.
We do apologize for our mix up on the emails. We do normally send weekly summary emails to families on the progress of the classes. This semester one member of our team moved on and we dropped the ball. It was a few weeks before we realized the emails weren’t going out and resumed them. We apologize for the inconvenience and have fixed the process, so it doesn’t happen again.
Thank you again for your feedback. I would like to offer you a personal tour of the facility where can review the projects in all the levels and discuss how the classes work in greater detail. We sincerely hope to see your students again in the spring. - Charlie M.Atlanta, GA622Jan 10, 2024

This business is run by lawyers. No class and no honor. I was charged for a membership that I canceled within the first month and they continued to charge me for a year (yes I should have caught this sooner by scrubbing my bank statements monthly) because the cancelation request wasn't sent to the one specific email that they require you to cancel through. This was never made clear. Instead it was sent to their contracts team (the same team that set up the account)...
And on the back end of this error, the management team ignored calls and emails to avoid having to make the situation right.
Just awful to see small businesses caged in community act like big business because they are lawyered up. But what should I expect out of Orange County?Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jerad A.Costa Mesa, CA1595Sep 23, 2023
This place is the best. My boys are taking their level one class now. So happy we found this. I can't say enough good about it. The instructors and administration, the professional work that is done there, the people and friendships. This is huge for us and everyone else we know that's involved is loving it just as much as well.

Went in to get more information on the welding program. Was greeted by the sweetest girl, Kamy. She took us on a full tour of the facility and answered all of our questions. The place is super welcoming and the staff is wonderful. I plan on joining the new AWS welding program they offer!

I really like this place. I have been a member for 5+ years. A lot of great people always willing to offer advise or lead a helping hand. From auto lifts and welding equipment to laser and vinyl cutting with full wood work and metal shops, you don't need to look for another place to do your projects. Stop in and take a tour to see what they have to offer. And no, I wasn't paid to write this.

I took a metal class here once in 2015 and had a good experience as a guest but now (seven years later!) I've been spammed with marketing emails and text. Even after unsubscribing they still contacted me. Is the business suffering so badly that they need to resort to unethical practices? This aggressive approach has left an awful impression on me.

Hi JW,
Thank you for your feedback. We did have some trouble migrating to a new marketing system a few months back and it did send out more messages than we had intended. We have resolved those technical issues. In all cases the unsubscribe buttons do work if you don’t wish to receive any further emails or texts.
We apologize for the inconvenience. It was not intended to be overly aggressive marketing. Urban Workshop continues to thrive and help members be successful at achieving their small business, project, and education goals. We sincerely hope your time here was beneficial and we hope to see you again in the future. - Dennis H.Juneau, AK09Feb 13, 2023
