The Refuge Spa was clean and smelled good. The staff listened and were attentive to my issues. They try to speak in a calming manner which was helpful to putting me, the client into the right frame of mind. After changing into their supplied robe and securing my personal items into their lockers, my spa visit started off with a “guided meditation” in an ergonomic recliner with a weighted blanket, head phones and a warm eye mask. I was expecting to hear a human voice “guiding” me with imagery but what I heard was from the right headphone the pleasant sound of waves crashing but from the left, which was not quite seated on my ear, I heard people talking and what sounded like cabinet doors slamming so I think, perhaps, I was picking up on a radio interference hiccup. Once I adjusted it, I heard an “ohm” sound coming from the left headphone. I told K and she said that had never happened before. My next stop was the floating room so I didn’t have time for the dry sauna. I showered using their very nice products. The floating pod is filled with Epsom salts. It smelled and felt clean. I didn’t have any out of body experience like some claim to have when in isolation bobbing around but it was pleasant. I showered again for my next stop which was a very pretty cocktail that contained lavender before going to the massage therapist. The therapist let me explain my issues. The massage session began with my head which felt great. She worked on my left leg/hip enough to let my legs bend in butterfly position - something I have not been able to do in quite a while. She explained also about my scar tissue causing my pain, something my primary care physician never mentioned. When I left, I did feel relaxed; my hair from the products and from the head massage rejuvenated my hair so I left with my natural curls looking perked up. I took my final shower in the pretty locker area. The shower stalls have an essential oil bottle with instructions to spray it at the wall so the steam envelopes you with the fragrance which was a relaxing way to end the visit. On the downside, we parked on the street because it was unclear where to park. I found out later that this spa is located inside the Renaissance Hotel but when I asked if this spa allows for guests to use the hotel’s jacuzzi like some spas located within a hotel offer when spending a certain amount, they said they did not offer that. All in all, for my first day spa experience, it was very nice. Now that I’m back home, I am going to explore getting massages to help me with my walking issues rather than spending money on physical therapy visits where one makes a co-pay and someone tells you to do certain prescribed stretches alone behind a drawn curtain.Lisa P.
