I came to see Synergy Fitness for some long standing hip pain. Birgit was amazing and I received the best physical therapy treatment! She was able to pinpoint the issue and I felt immediate relief.
What is also unique is that they also have an onsite and fully equipped gym. Physical therapy combined with the exercise program in their gym provided has kept me strong and pain free for years!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jane D.Brooklyn, NY326Jun 3, 2023
I'll never go to another gym. If you hate huge gyms with crowds, then this is the gym for you. The groups are small so you basically get a private trainer who is paying attention to your form and keeps you motivated. They'll also work with you to modify exercises if you have an injury or need to work up to something. Bonus point is that Kat is hilarious! She always has a great story to tell.

The good news is that I have seen a definite improvement since my last review. There are a few good trainers now, the place is clean and cheerful, and the regular presence of the owner, Birgit, who is also a most talented physical therapist, adds warmth and professionalism to the gym. The very small group size ( less than four, sometimes just one) is the format that I find most helpful.
There are about five trainers who rotate through the week, and, as one would expect, certain clients find certain trainers better suited to their needs. For example, I particularly appreciate one who makes good use of various equipment, rather than relying solely on free weights, which I find very tedious. Unfortunately, there is this very silly policy that Who Teaches When is guarded like a state secret. When I asked my favorite trainer about the days on which she taught, and she told me the manager admonished her : "We're not supposed to tell them that." The gym is very fortunate to have this trainer, and I found that she was treated disrespectfully on this occasion, and that the policy is utterly ridiculous. The official reason is that they do not share the information because it changes, but obviously there is a weekly schedule set in advance.
In a nutshell, there is definite improvement, but there is still a long way to go.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Apr 27, 2018Previous reviewI have loved this place-- it made a serious difference in my life. Started with physical therapy with Birgit, who is most talented, then moved on to her foundations of exercise class, and eventually to the regular classes with Michelle who was an exceptional trainer. She was a real professional, always courteous, kind, energetic and motivating, and in outstanding physical shape herself. I went from not exercising at all to working out five days a week. At that time, Synergy was worth more than five stars.
Since she left, however, the place is very different. The emphasis seems to be more on gimmicky things like T shirt sales and games and monthly themes, lots of chatter and giggles, and less serious working out. The workouts are less often of a circuit type, more often everyone in line doing the same thing. This is less demanding of the trainer who just stands there shouting " whooooo! "instead of having to check 4 different stations at once, but it is a lot more boring. Michelle used to make good use of the TRX, the two weight machines, ropes, medicine ball, exercise ball. No longer. Now it is an endless repetition of lunges, bicep curls and flutter kicks.
Generally, the place is more sloppy under the new management. The workouts are getting shorter, lasting barely 20 minutes. Sure, you can get a free bumper sticker, but the cold towels have become the size of postage stamps and are barely scented at all.
With the emphasis on small groups and a wonderful owner, I do hope Synergy finds its way to being the serious ( but fun) gym for women, with professional and experienced trainers, where attention to form was a priority. There is new trainer who would have been wonderful if trained by Michelle, but unfortunately that was not the case. I know the potential is there. Small group training for women, with rigorous but realistic workouts is a brilliant idea, but for the moment it is being very much dumbed down. I hope Synergy Fitness recovers from losing a Michelle. I also hope I can look forward to more early morning workouts in the future and update this review in a positive manner. - Nancy T.Durham, NC1642131225Mar 12, 2018
I'm really impressed by this studio. Despite it being a small studio with limited cardio equipment, it gets the job done. Each class has no more than 5 attendees so I've only experienced small classes with lots more individualized attention. With my chronic issues and being in and out of physical therapy due to old injuries, this is perfect for me. I've had corrections given to me even while on the cardio equipment and when doing my strength training, Kat (awesome trainer) literally looks at my form 360 degrees walking around me carefully watching my alignment. The reviews prepared me for the format of the classes - first 30 minutes devoted to independent cardio and 30 min strength in the second half with the trainer. I do wish I had longer sessions with the trainer but for now - as I ease back into working out, it works for me. I highly recommend !!!

Great class! 30 min of cardio which i was nervous was going to be boring cause it was on a machine (treadmill, etc.) but I used their rowing machine which was pretty different from most and they have a timer up to do 60 second sprints followed by ~20-30 seconds of rest, which made the time go by so quickly and definitely was better than what I would have done on my own. I switched to the elliptical after ~20 minutes.
Then the next part is 30 min of circuit. The trainers are awesome and super helpful! i am sure the circuit varies day to day but it was challenging for sure. The trainers were very helpful in examining my form and told me how to fix if I needed to. Really enjoyed the class!
After the class, one of the trainers taught me how to use a foam roller which was very helpful.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Melissa P.Alexandria, VA15322Jul 6, 2014
I've been going here for the past 6 weeks, and feel great!!!! I have been impressed from the get go! Michelle and her staff design workouts that are balanced weekly so all muscle groups are worked out, and they keep track of it all - when you did it, how much weight you needed, any physical limitations you might have, etc. They have you weigh in weekly and take measurements periodically to be sure you are on track and releasing weight/inches.
They help with your nutrition and come up with a plan, as Kat will meet with you to be sure you're 'on track' in a healthy manner. I was on a detox diet recently and she met with me to be sure I was detoxing in a healthy way and yet still had enough energy for working out. She was my lifesaver through this unknown territory for me, and I am so grateful!
I love only working out with 3 other women at most at a time - it gives me the individual attention/guidance I need and it provides me with encouragement to keep going because I'm being monitored. I can't whimp out! ;-) Most importantly the trainers can show you how to PROPERLY exercise without injuring yourself, and they are patient to show you every time. For someone who didn't know what she was doing, this was my answer to getting the job done without feeling stupid trying to figure it out.
Their online scheduling system makes it easy for you to schedule/modify/cancel your workout sessions, and it's been so convenient to use.
I've never seen a gym like this, and I have grown very accustom to it. I feel a sense of community and caring from the trainers and appreciate the effort they put forth toward making a difference. I am grateful for their help, encouragement, and support, and look forward to staying with them for a long time!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Gretel G.Durham, NC05Feb 11, 2017
This place is awesome! I get personal attention which reduced the injuries I used to get at the large box gyms when no one was correcting my form. At Synergy they know your name, offer nutrition advice and make sure that I'm doing all the moves correctly. Plus... there are ALL shapes, sizes, ages and abilities- so I never ever feel self conscious.

I've been going for 6 weeks and just signed up for 6 months. I'm so excited about the strength and endurance I've experienced in this short time. They have a Knowledgable staff that teach nutrition and fitness. They hold clients accountable with checking weight, measurements and tracking nutrition.
I was initially concerned because I have a knee and back injury but this has not been an issue because the trainers modify the exercise and I still feel challenged without worrying about hurting myself. I'm excited to see how my body is changing each week as I'm building muscle and burning fat.
The facility is clean! The staff is professional, high energy, positive and encouraging. I highly recommend that you give them a try.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - K O.Durham, NC02Dec 16, 2018
