• It's been an extraordinarily bumpy (and often traumatic) road for me over the years, to try to find a hair specialist who is legitimately skilled enough to cut and style my full length and very curly afro. I really appreciate Jessica's integrity in her committment to putting in the work to get my hair services right (and those of other racialized and intersectional folks). Her approach is anchored in social justice and IDEA (inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility), which is a game changer for me. She is willing to do the work to advocate against the (unfortunately) frequent conscious and unconscious racial biases that inform a lot of the practices in the beauty and hair industries. This includes creating a positive space for me, taking further training to strengthen some weaker areas in her professional toolset, trying new products, doing research, and really listening to me when I speak about concerns or needs. I have not been made to feel like the extra time, education and general ethics required to do my hair properly are inconveniences or an undue "burden" just because they differ from the "standards" which advantage dominant identifies. This is a much needed change from almost all of the other places I have tried. Her enthusiasm and passion for everything hair is as genuine as can be, and I'm grateful for all of it.
