So after my last review regarding being disappointed about not being called back, I did get a call from the owner who was very apologetic and let me know that I literally slipped through the cracks.
It's hard for two women to run a business with no receptionist at a time where the whole world wants a haircut and I get that. I really appreciated the phone call and explanation. She was very honest with me and that kind of customer service goes a long way.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0May 23, 2020Previous reviewVery disappointed. I saw on the Curly hair women of Denver Facebook page that the salon was opening back up and we needed to call or text to make an appointment, the online bookings were disabled for now.
So I called, the machine said that the phone was playing up and to call or text another number. I called that number and got through. Both the stylists were with clients but they'd call me back. Took down my details.
Never got a call back. I tried to text the second number I'd called two days later. No response. That was about a week or so ago. I guess they're being selective about their clients and returning clients who don't come often because they grow out their hair to donate it, don't make the cut.Jul 25, 2018Previous reviewThe drive downtown is never a great experience, or finding parking. Luckily for me, I got a spot right out the front! And, even with the drive, the hair cut was good enough that I'll come back here. Just maybe not on a Friday afternoon.
I have curly hair, and after finding the curly haired women of Denver fb page, I decided to give Shapes a go. They claim to know how to cut curly hair and all. And I'm totally over rocking the triangle head and the box head look.
Richelle, the owner, did a great job. I was donating my hair so we started with braiding it and cutting that off, then moved to a dry cut, wash, touch up cut and style. She showed me how to use the conditioner product and how to style it easily. I learnt a lot about curls that day.
I can see why people think she's rude. She's not, she just not in-your-face friendly like a lot of Americans are. She had a job to do and she does it well.
The online special is $5 off plus a gift for you the first visit, and she also let me get the $5 off for yelp check-in too! - Jessica C.Colorado Springs, CO3671Jul 24, 2021
Shannon did a great job bringing life back to my curls. It's been years since I've cut it. Figured I'd do something fun and treat myself. It was definitely a treat. Thanks again Shannon.

Came in with limited notice and received an amazing touch-up for a men's haircut. Richelle was kind, friendly, but most of all she knew how to adjust my haircut and give me just what I wanted. Her experience shows. I was so happy she was able to fix a bad cut and can't wait to go back.

Terrible experience. I will never go back to this place. They asked me 2 hours before my appointment to send a picture of my hair to make sure there is time. Shouldn't you be doing that in advance instead of 2 hours before the appointment? After sending the picture they did not ask to extend appointment, so I assumed everything was ok.
The owner/stylist Richelle is running 20 mins late and not the friendliest person I've ever met. Now I'm asked to stay later than I anticipated or rescheduled appointment. All I got was excuses and unprofessionalism. No time management or preplanning on heir end. If you knew your previous appointment was running late, you should've had the decency to let me know in advance before I showed up for my appointment . Ain't nobody got time for that when there are many other salons I can choose from. NOT IMPRESSED!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Tiffany S.Denver, CO84122Sep 9, 2018
Today I had an appointment at the salon...so I thought. I arrived and my name wasn't in the system. No problems a very nice stylist named Shannon called and asked another stylist named Richelle to come do my hair. She took time out of her day off to work with me which was very generous. But then she arrived and I immediately felt negative energy. I thought maybe because she came on her day so I just ignored the vibes. Welp that negative vibe never went away. I thought they did deva cuts there but she offered to use some other kinda product and a style that seemed new for her. I walked out very disappointed. My natural curls are big and full of life and she basically just twisted my hair which I would've been okay with if
1. I didn't have naturally curly hair
2. If it was a tighter twist
It was flat and a ball a frizz waiting to happen. Sooo I decided to fluff it up a little so I can get a least a few good pictures out it which I've attached. I did start to like the style a little more after fluffing but by the night time my hair was looking dry and flaked everywhere...yuck!
So,what I return??
Maybe but ONLY if Shannon was available. I was really digging her positive vibe and she really looked like she knew what she was doing. I was envious of her clients. *I posted pics of Shapes hair cut vs a deva cut I had before and was hoping to have againHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Kathryn S.Seattle, WA99212May 12, 2017
First,a comment about the service . I am stunned by any reviews that say Richelle is not warm and friendly. From the first time I walked in her door as a new customer I felt extremely welcome and cared for. And I'm not a young cool hipster.... but a woman of a "certain age" who's probably not necessarily the target audience for a cool salon. Perhaps the reviews about attitude say more about the writers themselves ? :)
Now about the hair...
long naturally wavy, frizzy dry auburn hair that is even more finicky postmenopausal. I walked in ready for a change. Richelle talkd to me ...I told her what "feel" I was after and then I let her have at it. She talked me through the cut and the styling, even giving me the most thorough handout with directions to take home.
I ended up with an above shoulders look....a bit beveled. She coaxed the waves out without my frizz. Really happy!
Went back a second time wanting a bit more change. I asked if she thought a shorter back would work...and she liked the idea and did it,adding her own touch.
On my third visit, I had a specific ask for her. And this is key.....I wasn't completely happy with how my hair looked when I wore it blown out after the second cut. But I realized I hadn't communicated to her that I like to wear it straight some times as well. she listened and knew what to do. Couldn't be happier!
On my way to see her for the fourth time next week.
Oh....I don't even live here. I make a point of coming when I visit my mom. and I have the option I'm getting my hair done in New York Washington DC Seattle and other top cities. Richelle is my gal!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Alexis C.Aurora, CO092Jun 4, 2017
Had my hair colored by Shannon... wanted dark purple ... instead ended up with red . She did attempt to correct some serious coloring mistake done by another stylist but still ended up with a bad color. Had to go else where for a complete redo!
Let me just say that she stated she was experienced with black/aa Natural hair and could offer nice natural hair styling.. i.e. Two strands. This was not true, she did not understand the need for a deep condition with heat on this type of hair before I told her and styling was terrible and dry. I went back thinking I could work with her because she seemed interested in learning. My experience was a year ago and I hope she has learned but based on my experience they may work with curly hair textures but not African American curly hair. Won't go back.
I don't post to hurt the stylist or salon and none of my post are about the person only the service. I post to inform women with similar hair textures ( 3c/4).Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Ninawa A.Arvada, CO115241Jul 25, 2017
The moment I stepped into Shapes Salon and Studio, I was greeted with nothing but a warm smile and attentiveness for their customers. Shannon was my hair stylist and was the first hair stylist that actually knew how to cut my crazy curly hair. The previous hair stylist I went to completely messed up my hair and made me look like I had a freaking mullet! Shannon thankfully corrected that and did a wonderful job. I will most DEFINITELY be coming back. You guys have a customer for life.

I went back and saw Jessica for another curly cut and color. Unlike my last visit, I decided to do something more drastic--we took about 6" off the length and added more highlights. The result: loved it!! I recommend this salon, and specifically Jessica, to all the curly Denver ladies out there! I am so ecstatic I stumbled on this salon and will be back for all my curly-haired needs.
Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0May 30, 2015Previous reviewI have 3a/3b curly hair and was desperate for a new stule. I knew I wanted a DevaCut, and thanks to the great reviews at naturallycurly.com, I found Shapes. I saw Jessica who was awesome! She took the time to understand my hair and my daily routine and gave me a cut I fell in love with instantly. My curls have been transformed. My favorite part of the experience was the mini-styling lesson. I learned lots of new tricks! Highly recommend to other curly girls!

Cindy Koder is the absolute best at cutting to your specifications, achieving exactly the look you want/need. I have been going to her for several years and it is such a treat. Show her photos, describe what works for your hair, and she will take care to be sure it's perfect. As an added bonus, her practice is such a lovely escape from the race that is life...she uses essential oils and offers a spectacular scalp massage at the start of your visit, and she's just such a wonderful person to talk to. I look forward to my Cindy visits!! (My hair is coarse, wavy/curly, and long... I go for piecey layers with a lot of dimension.)
