Q: I take the supplement NAC which also removes toxins from the body. Will it make my Dysport/Botox stop working sooner?
Answered by Renee Weeden, DHSc, PA-CFebruary 9, 2018

A: Botox works by disabling the nerve signal to the injected muscles. Clinical studies show that the actual Botox substance is absorbed within 4 hours after injection. Botox lasts 3 to 4 months because that is how long it takes for the nerves to regrow their ability to send signals to the muscle, not because the Botox is physically in there for that long. With this in mind, it is unlikely your supplement will have an impact on your Botox results.  Because there are minimal studies on supplements in general, there is no study I can point to that will give you a definitive answer. If you want to be on the safe side, just avoid the supplement for a few days before and after your treatment.

Q: Juvederm: I read that this is really good for lips but what about for the nasolabial folds?
Answered by Renee Weeden, DHSc, PA-CFebruary 9, 2018

A: There are currently 5 formulations of Juvederm brand fillers. Each one has unique characteristics that make it ideal for certain needs. From "thinnest" to "thickest" they are Volbella, Ultra, Ultra Plus, Vollure, and Voluma. Lips are most commonly treated with Volbella or Ultra. The nasolabial fold is most commonly treated with Ultra Plus or Vollure. (Of course there are always exceptions for each person's unique needs.) One thing to keep in mind is you may get a better result using Voluma to lift your cheeks instead of treating the nasolabial fold directly. You may also need a combination of the two. An experienced injector will be able to advise you which approach is best for your unique needs.
