Q:
Does anyone know if Joy of Motion is offering in person dance classes now? I have called multiple times and no one answers or returns my messages. However, the website shows that they're opened.
A:
Yes they do. We're there by-weekly. I think it might be better to try calling after 3pm. There is always someone there at the front then.

Is this place good for adult beginners/"never-dancers"? As in an adult who has no background in dance and is just looking for a fun way to lose weight and build up body confidence while possibly learning a new skill?
A:
Hey Beth! We absolutely offer classes for first-time dancers at the H Street location. The best option is to register for one of our Basics 1 series classes. Can you PM us your contact info so I can have the H Street studio staff reach out to you… more

The vibe was everything here Friday night. The entire staff was welcoming and we enjoyed the Day 6 of Dancing in the DMV. My daughter is excited to join this dance family thru Arts Haven Music & Dance

This event was free and energized by some of the most talented performers inside of the DMV. Normally this serves as a dance studio for the community, where people from all walks of life come learn, dance and most importantly have fun thru the expressive art of dance. Everyone here was so nice and welcoming. Walked in and it felt just like family. Sorry no pics...just high energy videos.

Fun fact-- as a kid, I was a technically trained dancer. From 5th grade through 10th grade, I was a student of modern, jazz, African, and ballet.
Fast forward to 2023, I'm a 34-year-old 240lb MAN, and I decided to tap back into myself by spontaneously enrolling into a drop-in ballet class on a random cold Tuesday night, and I'm glad i did! The venue is clean and the staff is friendly and inclusive. The instructor, Rachel, was great. The class was packed and for all levels, but Rachel created an environment that made me feel comfortable and took all my nervousness (and low key embarrassment) away. i enjoyed it so much that i took my (clearly out of shape) behind to her Modern Dance class immediately after. And I paid for it... i was sore for days. It felt GREAT! :)
Although both classes were for All Levels, I would've appreciated if the instructor showed movements full out instead of marking the steps and throwing us newbies to the wolves. Also I would love for Joy of Motion in general to host more adult beginning-level ballet classes or a flexibility, conditioning, and strengthening class using ballet techniques.
Joy of Motion is a beautiful venue conveniently located in the up-and-coming H Street corridor.
Overall, I had an amazing first-time experience and i will certainly return.Helpful 0Thanks 1Love this 3Oh no 0 - Ashley A.Washington, DC8811Nov 18, 2022
The instructor was wonderful, very inclusive of all experience levels, encouraging, and fun. The studio was a little dark so it was harder to follow her but a great experience. Highly recommend the Tease class.

Had a really great time in Tyrone's Afro Jazz class. The stretching and conditioning portion was intense for sure, but I felt great afterwards. The choreography was just challenging enough to give me a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day, but still have something to work on at home.
I was lucky to be able to take Afro Jazz that day because the class had been cancelled online (I just saw it listed on the paper schedule and decided to drop in). Fortunately, two other ladies missed the memo as well, and we ended up having a wonderful class experience.
I had to ding the studio a star both because it was freezing cold in the studio and because it smelled awful when I entered. I understand that many classes share these spaces, but a hit of Febreeze air freshener before and after classes would work wonders!Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Juanita W.Washington, DC01Apr 29, 2023
The turn around in employees continue to be a problem. Twice classes were cancelled because of no teacher shows and we were informed at the last minute with no compensation that the class would be rescheduled or we would get a prorated adjustment. I continue to have problems with registration: I enrolled my granddaughter for spring, Jazz and pre-ballet and today, you tell my daughter she is not registered but she has been attending every Saturday. You received two payments from me of $700 each for winter and spring sessions, I am owed a credit of $70, yet, it has never been applied. I was told winter credit would be applied in spring. My grand loves coming to the classes-though the space is small and crowded! Then atop all of this, some older woman tells me we have to buy new uniforms because what my child (and the 2 friends we referred) are wearing is wrong-even though what they are wearing in on the website as the attire. That is not our fault and there should be some flexibility or you all part or you can buy them the correct uniforms. I came to you all because of my experience with you when you were located at DuPont Circle. And your cost is much more reasonable the Washington Ballet. But I guess you get what you pay for! I am disappointed and frustrated. You all need to figure this out or no, my grandchild and her friends will not be coming back. And I have decided not to do summer camp! The administration is the problem, not the classes. My grand loves her teachers and the classes.

Jasmine was great for Hip Hop 1-bubbly, encouraging, informative. Definitely knew her material and I'm grateful I got to learn from her before the pandemic. 5 stars just for her.
I had some problems with another instructor but management was kind enough to reach out and ask if they could help resolve anything, then after collecting more details they informed me the instructor was already gone.
The facilities are fine. A few bathrooms and a water cooler. There's CaBi station nearby so it's easy to commute.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

Alice I'm so happy you had a great experience in your class with Jasmine!
Thank you so much for bringing your experience in your Modern 1 class to our attention. That is not behavior that we condone from our instructors and it's disheartening to hear that was your classroom experience. I'll follow up via private message.
To end on a happier note, Jasmine is currently teaching for us online and a new session of series classes started just this week. There's still plenty of time to join! Ms. Kerry greets all the students by name and my son absolutely loves being a member of the Joy of Motion community even my grandson marvels and mimics the dancers in the other classes and loves the markers and coloring sheets available to them. Thank you!

I love the location and the studio, but wish they had some lunch time classes on the schedule. The front desk staff seemed as unfamiliar with the process as I was. I'm not sure I would do another class here that has a stated level -- it's clear that the levels don't mean what they say they mean.
The beginning ballet class is not at all appropriate for beginners. The class lacked the instruction that is typical for a beginning class. It was mostly a shout out of different terms (e.g., glissade, pas de bourrée, échappé) followed by waiting for the instructor to queue the music and then trying to do those things. The students were a mix of skill levels, but some of the choreography was too challenging for everyone. The instructor made a few comments on students' form, but the comments were so limited that some might see it as being singled out.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Makita P.Los Angeles, CA571Feb 10, 2015
I am in love! I attended Yelp's Fit Club at Joy of Motion for the ASA! class and wowzers! My body feels the effects of the class and my soul is happy. I have been dancing all my life and had to stop for graduate school. I was just talking with friends about taking dance classes and I guess I spoke this place into my life! They offer so many classes for all forms of dance and all levels. I can't wait to try them.
Oh and it's a triplet! There are two other locations around the DMV area.
Bottom line: If you are a dancer, wanna try dancer, workout fiend or you just wanna shake a lil' something try joy of motion. Your body and soul will thank you!Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Khomari F.Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, NY36961129Jan 25, 2015
Joy of motion is a really great dance studio located in DC. I was only there for a few hours in order to film rehearsals for an award show but the brief visit was just enough of a glimpse to see how the studio was run.
The location is easy to get to and the dance studios look very well kept, clean and inviting. The staff that was there at the time was very friendly and courteous as well.
By the time we left it was a bit after 5pm so parents were bringing their children in for lessons and classes. It was good nice to see parents and some whole families there getting ready also.
Although my stay was short it was a cool environment and it always fun to see cute kids learning new things!Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0
