For those curious about Ayurveda basics, this consult explains Ayurveda’s holistic system of health and vitality. Ayurveda groups the five elements (space, air, fire, water, earth) into three doshas - vata, pitta and kapha. One is predominant in either one or two doshas and this is called ones, “constitution”. In this consult, one’s personal constitution is determined through pulse analysis and a brief Q&A. The Mahas Bhutas: The 5 Elements

The five great elements are earth, water, fire, air and ether. They represent solid, liquid, light, time, and space that make up the external world of experience, including our own body. In our busy culture, it’s common for us to become imbalanced and dis-eased as we tend to get habituated to one or two elements with little awareness of the nature of what we’re embodying, or if we’re out of balance. We can become rigid and stuck as we take on more than our fair share of the earth element; others take on too much air and can’t ground or root into anything; still others live with an abundance of fire and eventually burn up or out. To create a state of vibrant health, balance, and ease, the elements must all be brought back into equilibrium. The Earth Element (Prithvi) expresses itself through our connection with our planet, building a firm base of support, to feel grounded and secure, to rest in stability, to concentrate, 1st/Root Chakra.
The Water Element (Apas) expresses itself as the water that flows through our veins, the circulatory system, as we ourselves are mostly water (70%). Water is both flowing action-change and the profound calm and divine consciousness that rests in the stillness below the surface. 2nd/Sacral Chakra, the area where new life is generated.
The Fire Element (Agni) expresses itself as the light, heat, warmth (tapas) that can be generated through friction/change, and the “will” to go on even when we want to quit. It is the source of light which creates and destroys, symbolizing our soul. 3rd/Solar Plexus Chakra.
The Air Element (Vayu) expresses itself in both the inhale and exhale of the breath, and in creating shifts/changes by carrying life-giving prana throughout the body and the universe.
